The Federation of Newfoundland Indians

Update of Formation of Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band   Formation of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band is delayed pending the Federal Court of Canada’s determination of a Motion seeking an injunction on the formation of the Band until all applications filed before November 30,2009 have been considered by the Enrolment Committee.  A court date has been scheduled for September 9, 2010 to present arguments on the Motion.  The Court is expected to make a decision following the presentation of arguments but the timing for the release of the court decision is unknown.  If the Federal Court does not grant the injunction, the FNI will meet with Government officials soon after the decision is announced to determine potential timing for the formation of the Band.  At this point in time the formation of the band is not expected to proceed in September 2010.      Membership for the proposed Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation Band November 30, 2009 marks the conclusion of the first stage of the enrolment process held under the Agreement for the Recognition of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation Band.  This historic process has received overwhelming support and the uptake among the Mi'kmaq population is significantly higher than expected.  As of November 30, 2009, close to 25,000 applications have been received and approximately 11,000 have been approved by the Enrolment Committee, chaired by Mr. Tom Rideout.  In the coming weeks, the Enrolment Committee will finalize the initial list of members for the establishment of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation Band which will take place in early 2010.  The government and the Federation of Newfoundland Indians will continue to work together to see how the process for updating the membership list can be accelerated.   NEW FNI/RCMP Summer Student Video  Enrolment Q&A learn more about:    our success in our struggle for recognition    our Programs    Mi’kmaq Culture    our Resources
